With the continued delay of face to face classes, the Hotspot and Corner Shop Internet Connectivity Fund aims to provide students with internet connectivity at strategic and accessible locations in their communities so that they can access their classroom lessons on their devices.

Internet access in communities is essential for learning during the pandemic

As Jamaica grapples with a spike in COVID-19 cases, face to face learning will not continue as
anticipated for the 2021–2022 school year. Remote learning and its accompanying challenges
will continue. In an effort to address the internet connectivity challenges that many households
face, the Hotspot and Corner Shop Internet Connectivity Fund is seeking to build on the
ConnectEdJA Fund and the Ministry of Education’s A Device for Every Child Programme that
provided students with devices, by implementing internet connectivity hotspots at strategic
locations in communities across the island. These ‘corner shop’ locations will serve as a hub for
students to visit to connect to their classroom lessons on their devices.

The purpose of the Hotspot at Corner Shop project is twofold:
● provide internet connectivity to ensure educational equity and access for Jamaica’s
children and youth
● energize communities by supporting local entities where children and youth can utilize
the internet in a safe space
